Appreciation-grams

Does someone inspire you?  Encourage you?  Make you smile?

Get a free appreciation-gram in the SEC or from a ROCK or Sources of Strength participant, fill it out, and brighten someone’s day.  They will be available from January 23 through 27, and they will be delivered (with a little candy) on Friday January 27 and Monday January 30.

Send them to friends, teachers, even people you hardly know but appreciate for something they do.

Consider posting those things on HMGGMH.wordpress.com to let people know what we appreciate about the people who make up Gunn.

Our Partners and Recent Work

This year we are working with Sources of Strength, the national organization that empowers Peer Leaders to spread positive messages and affect the health of the community.  Check out their site.  They have a lot of information and ideas, and you can see what other schools have done.

http://www.sourcesofstrength.org/

We’re excited that 80 people — students and staff — participated in a workshop in November run by SOS.  Watch for some of the activities that we started planning then.

Look for magnets and posters with the wheel of areas of health and strength.   Ask a ROCK or SOS participant what gives them strength, and enjoy their answers.

Finals — No Fear!

We’re re-posting a message about finals that our original ROCK leaders posted two years ago.  It’s too easy to build up the idea of finals and let it be more stressful than necessary.  Take a deep breath, and show what you’ve learned.

Take a moment to read this classic post.  It has some good reminders.  Good luck!

______

Hey, Gunners!

ROCK just wanted to wish you good luck on your upcoming finals!

If you need to de-stress or vent, rocks are here for you. Just come find one of us, and we’d be happy to chat and listen whenever and wherever. You can find the current list of rocks here:
http://rockatgunn.wordpress.com/rocks-sorted-by-grade/
Please look out for your friends and classmates, but more importantly, take care of yourself.

Throughout the week, if you get nervous, take deep breaths, stay hydrated, and smile! Think of Lady MacB’s wise words, “What’s done is done.” After each test, don’t ponder over it or obsess over the questions you might have missed. Be glad that you’re done with that subject matter for the semester, and be proud of your efforts and the fact that you tried and did your best. :0)

As cliché as this sounds, grades aren’t everything. Seriously. These finals don’t define your character or the person you are. It’s just a part of the high school experience that we all go through. In ten years, you will still be out conquering the world. I know it.

Lastly, leave some time for some personal fun amidst your studying each day to chill, relax, take it easy, and refresh that gray matter. The power of a good night’s sleep is unbeatable (especially for those math tests!).

You’ve got this down. Believe in yourself–yes, you can. Go out and vanquish those exams!

Best of luck and holla when you need us,
ROCK

We’re Still Here

We haven’t posted in a long time, we know, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy.  This has been a productive year so far.  In cooperation with Sources of Strength, we have been coming up with activities and ideas about making Gunn a great place to be.  Stay tuned for more about what we have done and what we plan to do.

Let’s HMGGMH it up!

Hey there, Gunnites!

First off, congratulations to all of the seniors. We came, we saw, and we most definitely conquered.

Although it’s that time of year again for the rest of the grades (finals), rather than giving out the typical ROCK finals/testing message, I have a small ROCK mission for you–let’s compile the biggest HMGGMH of the year!

As the school year comes to a close, take some time to relax and appreciate all that is around you. There might be a friend, teacher, or classmate, that has made your time at school better, so take a minute and tell us why s/he Gives You Hope. Also, if there are little things around campus that make your day, such as the beautiful flowerbed next to the main office, tell us about that, too! We’d love to hear about anything at Gunn that makes you happy, inspires you, or just plain makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Please take just one minute to submit a story (of course, you can also submit more than one), and in turn, others can share your joys when they read your story. This is one minute that will spread lots of love and happiness in this world.

Click here to submit a story.

Thank you for your time, and may the testing gods smile upon you this week!

Share the love.

Share the hope.

Share the happiness. :o )

Pictures of You, Pictures of Me

This Friday………
ROCK presents the event Pictures of you, Pictures of me!
Photographers and camera men/women(ROCK members) will be running around school snapping photos of all your lovely faces.
We want to capture all the memories and new friends you have created this school year.
We will have designated photobooths located around the school, where you may head to to take your photos.

However, don’t let that stop you from bringing your own personal cameras!
We will be taking all the photos and putting them into one big fat collage to make the numbers 2-0-1-0.
This masterpiece will be revealed next week as a tribute to the seniors and this year.

So, this Friday come all out with photos!
Once you have all your photos, please send them to

rockatgunn@gmail.com
or
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=92593786543&v=wall&ref=ts

We’re super excited to see all these pictures!!

Remember the more the photos, the more beautiful the collage will be!
Thank you so much for all your support!

Oh, and remember to spread the word. (;

It’s sweet when someone knows

A cute quotation I found on the web:

“It’s sweet when someone knows every single detail about you. Not because you constantly remind them, but because they pay attention.”

A Message from ROCK to You!

G’day, Gunnites!

Let’s conquer those APs together.

As we approach two solid weeks of AP testing or other dandy exams and projects for you young’uns, please take some time throughout these next few weeks to check in with your friends and look out for them. See how they are doing, and don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. Spend some time to chill, relax, breathe, smile, and have some fun amidst your flashcard-making and intense highlighting.

Even if you have a lot of studying, be sure to take some breaks–they will replenish your brain power. It might seem like there is too much to do and too little time for it all, but focus on completing one task at a time, and you’ll make it. I believe in you. Oh, and drink lots of water to stay hydrated–weird fact: Did you know that your brain is around 80% water?

This can be a stressful time for many, but just remember that we’re all going through this together, and we’re all here for one another! :o )

In our ROCK trainings, one of the things we’ve learned is that our friends are often the greatest resources we have who can help alleviate any situation simply by being there, listening, and chatting. That’s basically what ROCK is, too. I encourage you to embody the ROCK motto especially in these next few weeks and Reach Out to those around you (and maybe even to those that you don’t know very well), show them that you Care, and get to Know more about them. You don’t have to be an “official rock” to exhibit these qualities. In fact, I’m sure all of you already do this in your daily lives.

With that said, don’t hesitate to call up a friend and tell them to be your rock. Each and every one of us can be someone else’s rock, and just being one person’s rock can make all the difference.

Feel free to contact the rocks listed on our website (http://rockatgunn.wordpress.com/) as well.

Do your best and forget the rest. Thank you for reading this letter, and I wish you good luck. Go out and kick some butt! :o )

Yours truly,
ROCK

Articulate why you Appreciate!

Has a teacher at Gunn who made a difference in your life or got you excited about a particular subject? Next week (4/26-4/30) is Staff Appreciation Week!

Send him or her an Appreciation Gram and articulate why you appreciate!

The grams are free, and you will be able to pick them up at the SAC by the end of the week.

Our goal is to have one sent to every staff member on campus.  You are welcome to send as many as you wish, and feel free to send some to your friends to tell them what you appreciate about them, too! We plan to deliver them throughout next week and the week after.
